A ProScale case study on indoor wall paint performed within Mistra SafeChem
A newly published brief report from Mistra SafeChem tells about a ProScale study on indoor wall paint. It is written by Josefin Neuwirth, Marie Gottfridsson, Tomas Rydberg, and Lisa Hallberg, all working at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute.
ProScale is a method to assess toxicity potentials for products from a life cycle perspective. In its current version, it covers direct human exposure-related toxicity potential. ProScale relies on readily available data from REACH. It proposes a performance-based indicator that can consolidate hazard and direct exposure potentials from chemicals along their life cycle.
We asked two of the authors, Josefin Neuwirth and Tomas Rydberg, about the study.
Why has this work been done?
The study was conducted by examination of the ProScale model in a case study on indoor wall paint. The reason for this choice was that the EU commission has paint as one of their pilots for Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), and a particular purpose of the case study was to showcase the applicability of ProScale in PEF.
How will it contribute to the development of ProScale?
The importance of the study is to showcase the applicability of ProScale in a PEF pilot study. It will contribute to the development of ProScale by increasing the understanding of how ProScale can help identify chemical safety issues in the life cycle of products.
