Pinene-based oxidative synthetic toolbox for scalable polyester synthesis

This article, with the participation of Per-Olof Syrén and Elisabeth Söderberg from Mistra SafeChem, relates to several of the program goals and showcases how green chemistry can be applied to upcycle inert forestry-derived building blocks into renewable polymers, with minimal generation of waste.

Inspired by nature it shows how conceptually simple oxidative transformations can be used to valorize biomass into activated monomers and further on to biopolymers.

This work highlights the potential to apply an oxidative toolbox to valorize inert terpene metabolites enabling the generation of bio-sourced polyesters and coatings thereof by complementary mechanisms.
