Enabling a circular economy for chemicals in plastics

Enabling a circular economy for plastics in Europe and beyond is an ambitious goal. To reach a fully closed loop, numerous challenges and knowledge gaps need to be overcome.

This is the subject of an article in Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry, written by the Mistra SafeChem researcher Peter Fantke, DTU, and others.

A list of more than 6 000 chemicals found in plastics is provided, of which more than 1 500 have been identified as “chemicals of concern” in different plastics applications that should be prioritized for substitution.

Along with this overview, challenges and gaps in assessing chemical impacts along plastic product life cycles are discussed, yielding five policy recommendations to support a circular economy for plastics.
