The Mistra SafeChem 2025 annual report summarises a very timely programme

By 2025, Mistra SafeChem phase 2 was operating at full capacity. Several new partners from industry and academia joined, and five case studies began. The annual report summarises the programme's progress in 2025.

In 2025, the European Union launched the European Chemicals Industry Action Plan, which aims to transform and modernise the sector. Another activity, supported by the Commission and launched this year, is the Critical Chemicals Alliance, which aims to support industry by forming alliances between a range of stakeholders.

– In this context, the Mistra SafeChem programme is very timely with our focus on innovation in the area of green and sustainable chemistry. In particular, we are a key player in developing tools and methods for the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) concept, says programme director Patrik Andersson.

Krister Holmberg, chairman of the Mistra SafeChem board, emphasises this point:

– It is increasingly clear that Mistra SafeChem’s core theme, Safe and Sustainable by Design, is timely and that the programme is an early actor in the field. In 2025, the programme co-organised an international SSbD conference at IVA’s premises in Stockholm.

Some of the interesting headlines from the annual report:

  • Research for sustainable textile fashion – interview with Tim Åström, Stockholm University
  • Prospective life cycle assessment for the future – interview with Anna Björklund and Laura Äkräs, KTH Royal Institute of Technology
  • Bio-based road signs: a result from LigniCore – interview with Pierre Munier, LigniCore

The report also details the work package achievements, the industry partners' ambitious goals, the programme's deliverables, outreach activities, and the awarded scientists.
