Mistra SafeChem case studies evaluated in new report
The tools developed within Mistra SafeChem are a major output of the programme. An important part of phase 1 was the case studies, in which these tools and workflows were combined and evaluated using real scenario challenges. A new report summarises this work.
The aim of Mistra SafeChem is to have an impact on the quality of life of humans and animals and to ensure a thriving environment. One work package was therefore developed to coordinate work with specific case studies carried out in academia and industry. It was the point of entrance for industrial partners to gain access to the developed tools and methods within Mistra SafeChem.
The specific objectives for this work were:
- To coordinate the interaction between the case studies and the various tools and methodologies developed in other work packages.
- To transform industrial challenges into cases suitable for the programme and evaluation of the tools.
- To formulate the results of the case studies into general conclusions regarding the efficiency and reliability of the toolbox.
Three groups of tools
The tools used have been developed within the Mistra SafeChem programme and belong to three overarching groups.
The first group are hazard and exposure screening tools, including chemical screening, in vitro prediction, and in silico prediction.
The second group are tools for process design and optimisation, subcategorised into catalysis/biocatalysis, electrochemical methods, textile recycling, and valorisation of forest residues.
The third group are tools for life cycle based assessment, mainly within life cycle assessment, chemical footprint assessment, and life cycle based alternative assessment.
See the toolbox on the website
As a result of this work, all the tools have been compiled in a toolbox Opens in new window., which can be found on the Mistra SafeChem website.
The report is written by Anneli Julander, Monika Witala, Emelie Apell, and Dämien Bolinius, all from IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, and Lisa Skedung, RISE.
